Alternative Payment Methods
Offer Buy Now Pay Later, bank payments, and wallet methods alongside card payments
Next Commerce supports a range of alternative payment methods (APMs) beyond traditional bankcards, including Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL), bank payments, and digital wallets. These methods are available on the storefront checkout, and many are also available for custom checkouts via the Admin API.
Availability depends on the payment gateway connected to your store.

For methods offered through NEXT Payments, enable the method in your NEXT Payments account first. After it is available on the account, go to Settings > Payments, select the NEXT Payments gateway, and enable it for the store.
Buy Now, Pay Later
BNPL methods let customers split purchases into installments at checkout, increasing conversion rates and average order values.
Affirm
Affirm enables customers to pay over time with transparent, simple financing — no hidden fees or compounding interest. Affirm is available to merchants processing via NEXT Payments.
- Available in the United States and Canada
- Supports one-time purchases only — does not support recurring subscriptions or post-checkout upsells
- Customers choose from pay-in-4 (bi-weekly), monthly installments (3-36 months), or pay-in-full
- Merchant receives full payment upfront — Affirm handles collections and risk
- Minimum and maximum order amounts apply — consult Affirm's merchant documentation for current limits
To enable Affirm, first log in to your NEXT Payments account and apply to add Affirm as a payment method. Once approved, navigate to Settings > Payments in your store, select your NEXT Payments gateway, and enable Affirm from the Alternative Payment Methods card.
Klarna
Klarna offers flexible payment options including Pay in 4, financing, and Pay Now (direct bank payment). Klarna is available to merchants processing via NEXT Payments or Stripe.
- Available in 19+ markets across North America, Europe, and Oceania
- Supports Pay in 4 (interest-free installments), financing (6-36 months), and Pay Now
- Supports recurring subscriptions — Klarna tokenizes the payment method for future charges
- Supports post-checkout upsells — additional items can be charged to the same Klarna session
- Merchant receives full payment upfront — Klarna handles collections and risk
To enable Klarna via NEXT Payments, first log in to your NEXT Payments account and apply to add Klarna as a payment method. Once approved, navigate to Settings > Payments in your store, select your gateway, and enable Klarna from the Alternative Payment Methods card.

Digital Wallets
TWINT
TWINT is a Swiss mobile wallet that lets customers pay from their TWINT app at checkout. TWINT is available exclusively to merchants processing via NEXT Payments.
- Available for eligible merchants selling to customers in Switzerland
- Works as a redirect-based wallet payment during checkout
- Supports one-time purchases and recurring purchases
- Supports one-click upsells after checkout
- Merchant receives payment through the connected NEXT Payments account
To enable TWINT, first log in to your NEXT Payments account and apply to add TWINT as a payment method. Once approved, navigate to Settings > Payments in your store, select your NEXT Payments gateway, and enable TWINT from the Alternative Payment Methods card.
TWINT is a NEXT Payments exclusive payment method. It is not available through Stripe gateways.
Swish
Swish is a local payment method for customers in Sweden. It is available to merchants processing through NEXT Payments.
- Intended for merchants selling to customers in Sweden
- Uses the connected NEXT Payments account
- Appears as an alternative payment method at checkout once enabled
Enable Swish in your NEXT Payments account first. Once it is available, go to Settings > Payments, select your NEXT Payments gateway, and enable Swish from the Alternative Payment Methods card.
Stripe Link
Stripe Link saves and autofills customer payment and shipping details across Stripe-powered checkouts, reducing friction and accelerating checkout.
- Available to merchants using Stripe as their gateway
- Customers save payment details once, then check out with one click on any Link-enabled site
- Supports card payments saved to the customer's Link account
- Available in all Stripe-supported markets
To enable Link, navigate to Settings > Payments, select your Stripe gateway, and enable Link from the Alternative Payment Methods card.

European Bank Payments
iDEAL
iDEAL is a bank redirect payment method for customers in the Netherlands. It is available through NEXT Payments and Stripe.
To enable iDEAL through NEXT Payments, add it to your NEXT Payments account first. Once it is available, go to Settings > Payments, select the NEXT Payments gateway, and enable iDEAL from the Alternative Payment Methods card.
For Stripe, go to Settings > Payments, select the Stripe gateway, and enable iDEAL.
Bancontact
Bancontact is a bank redirect payment method for customers in Belgium. It is available through NEXT Payments and Stripe.
To enable Bancontact through NEXT Payments, add it to your NEXT Payments account first. Once it is available, go to Settings > Payments, select the NEXT Payments gateway, and enable Bancontact from the Alternative Payment Methods card.
For Stripe, go to Settings > Payments, select the Stripe gateway, and enable Bancontact.
Stripe European Bank Methods
These additional bank payment methods are available through Stripe:

To enable one of these methods, go to Settings > Payments, select the Stripe gateway, and enable it from the Alternative Payment Methods card.
Payment-method availability and onboarding requirements vary by region and account. Review the requirements shown in your payment account before enabling a method on the store.
Custom Checkout (Admin API)
Many alternative payment methods listed above are available on the Admin API for custom campaign checkouts, not just the storefront.
